The Powhatan Confederacy
The first Powhatan originally were a small, powerul nation of Amerian Indians. They lived on the coast of what later became Virginia. Chief Wahunsonacock, later called Powhatan, led the Powhatan nation. He united more than 30 tribes with 14,000 individuals in the region to form the Powhatan Confederacy. These tribes included the Pamunkey, Rappahannock, Nansemond, and Mattaponi.
The tribes of the Powhatn Confederacy shared similar traditions and cultures. They spoke forms of the Algonquian language.
